The Z-axis is an essential component that enables the printer to move the building plate up and down, allowing for precise layering during the printing process. Over time, the Z-axis may become worn or damaged, leading to issues such as layer shifting or uneven prints.
In this guide, we will guide you through important steps to replace the Z-axis of your Sonic Mini 8K, ensuring that your printer is operating at its best and producing high-quality prints.
1. Removing the Old Z-axis
Power down and Prepare
- Turn off the printer and unplug it
- Remove the UV cover, resin vat, and building plate
- Loosen the two screws and remove the plastic plate located on top
- Loosen the 8 screws on the T-plate
- Turn the lead screw counterclockwise to remove the T-plate
- Secure the sliding guide with tape to prevent it from moving during the replacement process
Remove the bottom case and the Z-axis
- Carefully lay the printer down on a flat surface
- Loosen the 4 screws on the bottom case and open it
- Gently unplug the LED connector and remove the bottom case
- Loosen the 2 screws on the platform that is attached to the motor
- Take the Z-axis out of the printer
- Loosen the 2 screws that secure the shock absorber
2. Installing the New Z-axis
Install the new Z-axis
- Tighten the new shock absorber and secure the motor in place
- Put the Z-axis in its position inside the printer
- Tighten the 2 screws on the platform that is attached to the motor
- If you need to replace the slide rail, loosen the 5 screws located on the rail
- Attach the LED connector to the mainboard
- Tighten the 4 screws to reinstall the bottom case securely
- Remove the tape
- Put the T-plate back and turn the new lead screw clockwise to secure it in place
- Tighten the two screws and reinstall the plastic plate located on top
- Reinstall the building plate, resin vat, UV cover
- Turn the printer upright
Verify the Z-axis functionality
- Plug in the power cord and switch on the printer
- Run Z-calibration to verify if the Z-axis works normally
