The Z-axis is an essential component that enables the printer to move the building plate up and down, allowing for precise layering during the printing process. Over time, the Z-axis may become worn or damaged, leading to issues such as layer shifting or uneven prints.
In this guide, we will guide you through important steps to replace the Z-axis of your Sonic Mini 8K S, ensuring that your printer is operating at its best and producing high-quality prints.
1. Removing the Old Z-axis
Remove the bottom case
- Turn off the printer and unplug it
- Remove the UV cover, resin vat, and building plate
- Carefully lay down your printer
- Loosen the 4 screws on the bottom case and open it
- Unplug the LED connector and Fan connector, then remove the bottom case
Disconnect the LCD ribbon cable and the motor cable
- Locate the LCD ribbon which connects the LCD screen and the mainboard
- Open the cable clip and detach the LCD ribbon cable (see ① ② below)
- Locate the motor cable which connects the motor and the mainboard
- Unplug the motor cable from the motor
Remove the old Z-axis
- Turn the printer upright
- Loosen the 2 screws on the platform that is attached to the motor
- Turn the Z-axis counterclockwise until it becomes loose while holding the T-plate with the other hand
- Take the Z-axis out of the printer
2. Installing the New Z-axis
Install the new Z-axis
- Put the new Z-axis in its position inside the printer
- Turn the new Z-axis clockwise to screw in the bearing sleeve
- Tighten the 2 screws on the platform that is attached to the motor
Reassemble the printer
- Attach the motor connector and LCD ribbon cable
- Attach the LED connector and fan connector to the mainboard
- Install the bottom case
- Turn the printer upright
Verify the new Z-axis functionality
- Plug in the power cord and switch on the printer
- Run Z Axis Calibration to verify if the Z-axis works normally
