If you notice that your printer’s LCD is dimming or not illuminating, there might be something wrong with your LEDs. This article will guide you through a complete process in which you can easily verify whether the LEDs can still function properly or have become faulty.
DO NOT look directly at the UV light to prevent eye discomfort.
1. Visual check the LED chip (COB)
Power down and prepare
- Turn off the printer and unplug it
- Remove the UV cover, resin vat, and building plate
- Carefully lay down your printer
- Loosen the 4 screws on the bottom case, and then open it
Identify the LED Driver Board and disconnect the LED connector
- Locate the LED Driver Board on the inner side of the bottom case
- Gently unplug the green LED connector from the mainboard and remove the bottom case
Identify burnt LEDs
- Locate the LED inside the black hood
- Take a picture of the LED to see if there is any burnt LED
Another method to identify burnt LEDs
- Turn on the printer, then tap TOOLS ➝ LCD TEST to activate the LED
- Take a photo of the LED chip (COB) to confirm if there is any burnt LED
2. Check the red & black wires of the 3 LED terminal blocks
The LED connections consist of three pairs of wires. One pair is connected to the mainboard, and the other two pairs are connected to the LED driver board. That is, Terminal 1 is situated on the mainboard, while Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 are situated on the LED driver board, which is located at the bottom case.
If the LED on the Sonic Mini 8K is not lighting up, check the connections of the LED terminals as they may be the cause of the issue. Below are the checking steps.
Power down and prepare
- Turn off the printer and unplug it
- Remove the UV cover, resin vat, and building plate
- Carefully lay down your printer
- Loosen the 4 screws on the bottom case, and then open it
Identify the LED Driver Board and disconnect the LED connector
- Locate the LED Driver Board on the inner side of the bottom case
- Gently unplug the green LED connector from the mainboard and remove the bottom case
Reconnecting the black and white cables
- Prepare a slotted screwdriver
- Reattach the red & black wires on Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 if the wires have become disconnected from the terminal block
- Reconnect Terminal 1 to the mainboard
Reinstall the bottom case securely
- Tighten the 4 corner screws on the bottom case
Turn on the printer and run a test
- Plug in the power cable and turn on the printer
- Perform LCD test or VAT cleaning to activate the LED
- Check if the LCD has returned to normal brightness
3. Check the Power Adapter
The purpose is to check whether the power adapter being used is the original one provided by Phrozen and matches the correct specification. Using a different power adapter can cause the LED to not light up properly.
- Check the label on the power adapter to verify its specification
- Confirm that the power adapter specification is rated at 24V / 2.5A
