Inspecting and lubricating the Z-axis ball screws
Periodically inspect the Z-axis ball screws to ensure it moves smoothly and that no debris is built up in the screw threads.
If the Z-axis does not move smoothly or makes noise while moving, lubricate the screw it rides on. Lubricate the screws every 6 months.
REQUIRED SUPPLIES:
-
Low-fiber paper towels
-
Lithium grease
-
Non-reactive nitrile gloves
RECOMMENDED GREASE:
-
Shell_Alvania Grease S 2
-
REACH_151 EP Lithium Grease
Inspection Procedure:
- Put on a new pair of clean gloves.
- Disconnect the printer from its power source.
- Rotate the Z-axis ball screw.
- For downward motion: select TOOL→Z-CALIB→START
- For upward motion: select TOOL→Z-CALIB→UP BUTTON (10mm step)
- While the Z-axis moves up and down, check for areas that emit noise or where the carrier sticks or moves less smoothly. Look and feel for any debris or foreign objects that obstruct the lead screw or path of motion.
- Visually inspect the Z-axis to ensure that lubricant covers the full length of the screw threads.
- If the lead screw is missing lubricant or if the Z-axis emits intermittent noises when printing, proceed to lubrication procedure.
Lubrication Procedure:
WARNING: Be careful not to touch any other parts of the printer with the lubricant-coated gloves.
- Put on a new pair of clean nitrile gloves.
- Disconnect the printer from its power source.
- Remove the building plate and resin vat.
- Rotate the Z-axis ball screw and place a clean low-fiber paper towel over the screw to clean it.
- For downward motion: select TOOL→Z-CALIB→START
- For upward motion: select TOOL→Z-CALIB→UP BUTTON (10mm step)
- Apply a light layer of recommended lithium grease specifically intended for use with ball bearings evenly along the screw. Apply the lubricant directly from the container or by dabbing the lubricant onto the screw with a gloved hand.
- Rotate the Z-axis ball screw.
- For downward motion: select TOOL→Z-CALIB→START
- For upward motion: select TOOL→Z-CALIB→UP BUTTON (10mm step)
- While the Z-axis ball screw moves up and down, listen, look, and feel to check for areas that emit noise or where the carrier sticks or moves less smoothly.
- Wipe the screw with a microfiber cloth or low-fiber paper towel to remove excess lubricant.
